Having made a hearty breakfast we got afloat again, and about 1 P.M. observed a small prairie on the right bank with some Indian mounds: they reminded me of the lesson I got in Lake Huron, when violating the deserted tombs upon the small island, and I was far from offering any disrespect to these. About 2 P.M. the river began to widen, and we were rapidly approaching the point of its confluence with the Mississippi, I could already perceive the lofty right bank of that famous stream at the end of the vista; and being desirous of letting the men dine, and of taking a sketch of the confluence of these two noble rivers, I landed for an hour. At half-past 3 P.M. we bade adieu to the charming Wisconsin, and to the enjoyment of floating upon a favourable current, having entered upon the broad surface of the Mississippi, where our course was changed to north-north-west, and all our force was wanted to contend against the force of the descending stream. The river appeared at this point to be about 900 yards across; its waters were clearer than those of the Wisconsin,
having the appearance of a fine, glassy, deep-water lake, and reflecting the sun's rays, which in summer days almost reached the water's edge, were at least 90 ft. deep and 30 ft. wide, leaving a good breadth of 10 ft. on the under or left bank, and from 30 to 40 on the upper or right bank. About 11 A.M. we again embarked, and reached the Missouri at the junction or passage between these two rivers. As we approached the point from whence the head of the Mississippi might be seen, I landed again, and, mounting to the top of a high mound, discovered his source, as we had previously calculated. Before we had time to prepare to land, we were hailed, and an Indian came to us, informing us in the Delaware language that some of his race lived upon that island, and they had a deed from the mother country to continue here forever. We replied by signs, showing him, to be bound for the upper waters, which we hoped to follow up. This we did, and, after about 1200 m d2c66b5586
