Renal colic can be defined as a sharp, severe, incessant pain in the flank and lower back and radiating into the thigh. There are several causes of renal colic, including kidney stones, cysts, tumors, blood vessels or the ureter. It is estimated that nearly one million renal colics occur each year in the United States. Since most of the people who suffer from renal colic are not aware of the situation, they often do not consult their doctors and are not treated. Because of this, many people suffer from renal colic unnecessarily and fatal complications can occur. One complication of renal colic is the possibility of a ureteral stone migration. In about 44% of cases, migration of a renal stone causes renal colic pain. The pain usually begins in the lumbar region (protuberance of the hipbone) and radiates over the front (anterior) and back (posterior) parts of the abdomen and the back of the thigh. Another complication of renal colic is perforation of vertebral body by a ureteral stone. This is a very serious and life-threatening condition, with most patients dying in less than 48 to 72 hours. Typically, patients suffering from renal colic are referred to a urologist who removes the renal stone with a lithotripter. The technique involves a lithotripter, which is a device that vibrates at a high frequency to deliver high energy shock waves to the stone. The shock waves cause the stone to break up and fragment. The lithotripter is positioned such that the stone fragments can be removed by cystoscopy or a ureteroscope. Although shock wave lithotripsy is proven to be safe and effective, it has drawbacks. The patient has to endure an undesirable and uncomfortable procedure using general anesthesia, and the procedure is time consuming. In addition, the equipment is expensive, and several sessions are required to remove all the stones. d2c66b5586
